A 20-liter aquarium can be one of the most rewarding tanks to keep – provided you put the right fish in it. This preset aquarium is designed with one peaceful micro-school of 10 Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae). These fish remain small, are peaceful in a well-planted aquarium, and are best displayed in an appropriate group. The "one great school" concept in a nano tank is generally more stable and natural than trying to combine several species in small numbers.

Why this stocking is appropriate for a 20L tank

Chili rasboras are social fish and feel secure only in groups. If there are fewer fish, they will hide and be nervous and show less color. With a larger school, you will observe tighter schooling, confident swimming, and stronger feeding responses. In this preset, there are 10 fish:

  • Meets minimum school size recommendation (8+)
  • Offers a strong school for natural behavior and interaction
  • Keeps within a conservative water volume budget for a 20L tank

Best Aquascape for Chili Rasboras

Chili rasboras do best in a tank that is a secure little world:

  • Dense plants, especially for a school of fine-leaved stems and mosses to make them feel secure
  • Floating plants to reduce stress and soften light
  • Dark substrate or natural sand/gravel to maximize their red color display
  • Gentle filtration (strong current can keep them stressed and hiding)

This is not just for show-having plants in your tank will actually help stabilize it because they use up nitrogen waste products and help smooth out variations in parameters, and this is particularly important in small volumes like a 20-liter tank.

Water and Temperature Basics (Keep It Stable)

In a nano tank, stability is more important than trying for perfect numbers. Chili rasboras will do best if you provide:

  • stable temperature (no sudden changes)
  • clean water (no ammonia or nitrite present)
  • a regular maintenance schedule (as opposed to infrequent but extensive water changes)

If you’re new to aquariums, there is one single best way to guarantee success: cycle your tank before adding fish! A well-cycled aquarium will safely process waste products and prevent the so-called “new tank syndrome” that kills fish if they’re added too early.

Feeding tips (nano tanks stay clean when you feed light)

Chili rasboras have very small mouths. They prefer small foods and eat modestly:

  • give them as much as they can quickly finish
  • take away any uneaten food if it settles at the bottom
  • keep feeding them regularly but not abundantly

Overfeeding is one of the quickest ways to overstock a 20L tank, so “a little and often” is the best policy.

Customize this preset in Virtual Aquarium

This page is a springboard, not a limit. You can load this preset into our Virtual Aquarium software, where the tank size and fish are pre-entered. From there, you can:

  • adjust the number of fish (with group recommendations in mind)
  • explore other nano fish choices
  • see the new required water volume immediately
  • examine a combined suitable temperature range for your fish choices

If you want more variety—like adding bottom dwellers—try increasing the tank size to 30–40L in the tool. In a 20L, a single strong school is usually the most stable and best-looking choice.
