A nano aquarium of a 20-liter size can be a suitable “small space” aquarium – provided you select a stocking scheme that is stable and respects the behavioral patterns of fish. This is a pre-designed aquarium that is based on a stable and tested idea for a centerpiece – an adequate school of Ember Tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae). Tetras are small peaceful fish with a bright orange color; they feature most appealingly in an adequate school rather than in small numbers.

Why Ember Tetras are ideal for a 20L Nano Tank

They are schooling fish; being understocked can make them shy, hiding, and more plain. In a larger group, they relax, feed confidently, and move together well enough to make the aquarium feel alive. This preset uses 10 ember tetras, which

  • meets the minimum recommended group size (8+)
  • strong in vision “micro-school” effect.
  • keeps things simple (one species, one set of needs)

For a nano tank, "one great school" appears to be the most beginner-friendly option because the primary mistake new aquarists make for a nano tank—mixing species and species with too few individuals—can be avoided.

Aquascape style for thriving ember tetras

Ember tetras are most comfortable when kept in well-covered tanks with soft currents. The following layout has proved to be extremely effective:

  • Midground plants for shelter, crypts are a classic choice
  • Moss or fine plants for extra hiding spots (for shy fish)
  • Floating plants for the softening of light and reducing stress
  • Open swimming space in the front so that the school is visible

Embers also “pop” visually over a darker substrate or natural toned sand/gravel, especially with green plants behind them.

Filtration and flow (keep it gentle)

In 20 liters, stability is important rather than strong circulation. Filtration: Choose a system that keeps water clean without blowing the fish away:

  • gentle, steady flow
  • good biological media capacity
  • sponge pre-filter (optional, but useful in nano tanks)

A calm water current will have the ember tetras staying in open water, rather than hugging the corners or hiding behind decorations.

Water stability basics (the secret to nano tank success)

Small tanks change fast with temperature and waste accumulation occurring quickly, unlike large tanks. In order for ember tetras to thrive in their environment:

  • cycle the aquarium before adding fish (ammonia and nitrite must be 0)
  • maintain temperature stability (avoid temperature swings)
  • avoid overfeeding (extra food becomes extra ammonia)

If you’re new, a stable routine beats perfect numbers. Clean, consistent water is what ember tetras respond to most.

Feeding tips (keep it clean and easy)

Ember tetras have small mouths, and small foods are best provided. Feed lightly

  • small portions they can finish quickly
  • remove uneaten food if it settles
  • keep a regular schedule rather than heavy feeding

Overfeeding is one of the quickest routes to transforming a healthy 20L tank into an algae and ammonia soup, hence "less is more" in nano tanks.

Customize this preset in Virtual Aquarium

This page is designed as a ready-to-use starting point. Open it in our Virtual Aquarium tool to:

  • increase or decrease the ember tetra count (while respecting schooling minimums)
  • test alternative nano schools
  • instantly see required water volume updates
  • view a combined suitable temperature range for your selected fish

If you want to add other fish types (like bottom dwellers), you’ll usually get better results by increasing the aquarium size first. In a 20L tank, a single strong school—like 10 Ember Tetras—is one of the simplest and most attractive setups you can build.
